I decided to manipulate the cloth, in this case fold it lengthwise and sew it with polyester black thread and then put in a red dye bath.

Afterwards, I hung the fabric and waited to decide on how to use it.

The commotion of the holidays has passed. I don't know about you but I cannot start creating if I don't see everything tidy and organized. I don't have the luxury of having a big space like a studio so I have to improvise. We went to IKEA and found these sturdy carts in the kitchen section (ATTITYD drawer unit). By measuring the capacity of each drawer we realized that if we put three plastic inserts made for cuttlery inside, I could use it to store my threads and beads.I can take out the section I need and tag it along with me wherever I'm working and place it again in the drawer once I'm done. Best of all, because this carts has wheels, I can take it with me to any place in the house with all my materials in it in case I need it.

As we get older chances are that we get some more dental work done. Some of us end up with crowns and bridges. We all know how difficult they are to clean especially when we eat leafy food and seeds. There’s nothing more embarrassing than being seated around a table, with friends, enjoying spinach dip, salad or delicious sushi and food gets stuck between your teeth without noticing it. You continue your conversations oblivious to the pesky stuff “decorating” your mouth.

“Soft-picks®”, which are little cones that you can carry in your pocket or your purse, are ideal for rescuing you in these kinds of situations. That’s why I had the idea to do a case for them, which is flat, small and funky that I can carry everywhere and, best of all, it is made from recyclable material!

Let me guide you through the process:

Choose a colored piece of newspaper and write on top with a black marker. It doesn’t matter if it is legible or not, nobody is going to read it--what you want are the black marks to be a part of the design. It is a liberating stage.

Once you are happy with the design choose one or two acrylic colors mixed with a little water and paint the whole surface.

Iron interfacing on the back (any kind will do).

Print words from your computer, in this case I chose the word “smile” in four different languages and cut them apart. Cut letters from newspaper and shapes from colored papers with the help of punchers or the Slice® http://whyslice.com/machine.

Iron on Vinyl on top, which is a sticky plastic that comes on a roll. I used the Therm O Web® brand. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Cut in strips 6 inches long and 2 inches wide.

With the help of a glass, mark and cut a rounded shape on one end and sew a small button on the other; as shown in the picture.

Fold 1 ½ inches up, from the straight end and sew each side with straight stitches. Put a drop of Fray Check® at the ends before cutting the thread tails.

Once sewn, fold again but this time 2 ½ inches up and crease.

Congratulations, your funky case is done! Make sure you make more than one since your friends will love them too!

I made these ornaments from brown paper bags, newspaper and magazine clippings and used eco-felt for the backing. I used my SLICE http://whyslice.com/ machine to cut the wording for the front.

Silk and Wool Scarf

This is a silk and wool scarf that has been dyed and over dyed three times with acid dyes. During the process, I noticed this type of dye also splits when applying a new color. Next time I will take notes to have them on hand as a reference for the next dyeing session. The main problem I have is with the finishing technique. Since I bought the yardage and cut it myself according to the size I wanted, I took the piece to my serger and tried different stitches BUT I don't like the end result. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am on page 19! What a nice surprise. One day before Thanksgiving I got a package from Interweave--I thought I had forgotten that I had ordered something online and when I opened it I found the magazine with a letter from Pokey Bolton notifying me that my quilt "Twitter" had been selected to appear in the magazine! Interweave selected 33 out of over 300 finalists. I am honored and humbled to be published alongside so many talented artists.

International Quilt Festival in one day

Thursday night my husband came home and said to me: Pack your suitcase. We are leaving tomorrow. Where are we going? I asked, and he replied, to Houston to the International Quilt Festival! I was so excited that didn't know what to pack and could barely sleep. So we traveled to Houston for a day. Let me tell you what a wonderful experience we had. Everybody was happy to be there and the energy was amazing. First we went to see the display of the quilts--they did a beautiful job hanging every piece of art. Some I've seen in pictures but it does not do them any justice, seeing them in person is something else. I felt a chill going through my body when I saw two of my quilts in the competition "The World of Beauty".

Yes, I wish I could have stayed a little longer to have time to read every artist's statement to understand the reasons behind their work, and to take some more pictures, but I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. What a day. It was long, but we finished happily tired with my heart full of memories. We rested on the flight home.

I recently came back from my trip to Peru and had a wonderful time. I got together with an old friend from college whom I haven’t seen in 30 years!! She gave me an orange and yellow pendant design by her. It is made with fused glass and said it represented the summer days in Peru since they are very hot and humid. So, when I came back I wanted to paint a silk scarf that complements it. After I read the March word “sunshine”(from my Kaiku group), I figured I would make a Haiku about it:

I made this piece for the "Merge and Flow" members' show which will be held in Minneapolis this coming June.

Description: While doing research from the

pre-Colombian era in Peru I started doing my drawings and ended up with this fish. I wanted to create a river where two colors merge so I used jungle green and golden yellow and create the illusion of movement and flow with the wavy hand-dyed and silk screened fabrics. The hand embroidery patterns are typical designs the natives used on their clothing and ceramics.

Materials: painted, hand-dyed and silk screened cloth. Paper lamination. Machine, hand embroidery and beading.

I'm involved in a swap from the "Surface Design Group" where I have to demonstrate a technique. I decided to show how to do a paper cast using water soluble paper as Maggie Grey states in her book, "Paper and Beyond". Put two layers of the paper on top of your stamp and wet it carefully with your finger
Wait until it dries completely and peel it off
Find a background (in this case an ATC colored with tissue paper)

Paint with thick acrylics

Once dried, rub with metallic wax

It is the perfect texture to add some chunky stitches and beads.

Since I did an ATC, you know me I have to do a jacket that goes with it. Although I love to use interfacing, as I showed it to you before in my other post, this time I used newspaper, covered it with gesso first, then painted with gold acrylic paint. To finish it off, I used the same stamp I used for the paper cast to stamp it all over.

This is my first attempt to try calligraphy using a dip and parallel pens with assorted colors of ink on fabric.

Since Valentine's Day is coming, I printed words that represent what that day means to me.

Then I pasted newspaper and magazine clippings on top, which I later painted with watercolors.

To finish it off, I sewed the piece by both machine and hand, and embellished with beads.

I made this card for a nice lady who is celebrating her 8Oth birthday! The background motifs are flowers which I made from fabric and real dried "pansies" from my garden. Then I drew and colored the bird with watercolors.

I painted the background with dyes and the fish with transparent fabric paintsAfter I soaked the fabric with soda ash, I applied water-soluble resist paste with the help of a thermofax screen. I made the screen and imprinted words on it that relate to "fish" and put the same fish design from the front but in a different size. Then, after washing the fabric, I used the same screens but this time with fabric paints.

How to do ATC jackets

Since I'm involved in various ATC swaps this year, I decided to make some small jackets to enclose the ATCs. This is what I did:

I painted "medium interfacing," not the iron-on kind, with acrylics. When dried, I decorated them with the help of thermofax screens and stencils . Then I cut 3 1/2 x 8 inch strips and folded them in the middle.

I sewed them in each side and in the back transferred, with iron-on transfer paper, my name and blog address. These are two more ATCs:

Tomorrow we are celebrating three of my friends birthdays , two of them were born exactly the same day! We will go to the usual Chinese place, where we go every year for this occasion. This is one of the cards I made using newspaper and gesso for the background; then I transfered Happy Birthday words written in different languages from a transparency and the help of "matte medium gel" then I painted with watercolors the butterfly and stenciled the bamboo plant with oil sticks.

Since I have friends that celebrate the holidays but not necessarily Christmas, I made these greeting cards without religious motives using recycled materials that I have on hand.
This project was lots of fun and very relaxing. I took a brown paper bag and wrote down all my emotions with a black marker. Then I painted the bag with gesso. Once it dried, I painted it with red and blue acrylics. After that I used stencils imprinted with words. Then I took metal tape, wrote more emotions down with an old pen, painted the surface with black, blotted it with a paper towel and cut the vase. After that I cut flowers from a newspaper and pasted them on. Lastly , I used my sewing machine to accentuate the design.

I modelled this collage with watercolor paper background and fabric on top, then I stitched with the help of the sewing machine and by hand. This is one of the techniques I learned from the class.
